Garowe, April 2, 2021 The Head of the Production Department at the Office of Media and Communications of the Puntland Parliament, Mr. Hanad Ali Jama Hikmaawi, officially opened a training workshop today for 30 journalists representing both public and independent media outlets. The three-day training program focuses on enhancing journalistic skills in key areas such as parliamentary reporting, media ethics, and the use of modern digital tools in journalism. The initiative is part of the Puntland Parliament’s broader efforts to strengthen transparency, accountability, and public awareness of legislative affairs. In his opening remarks, Mr. Hanad Ali Jama Hikmaawi emphasized the importance of empowering media professionals, stating that journalists play a vital role in informing the public and supporting democratic governance. He also reiterated the Parliament’s commitment to building strong partnerships with the media to ensure accurate and responsible reporting. Participants expressed their gratitude to the Office of Media and Communications for the opportunity and pledged to apply the knowledge and skills gained during the training to improve the quality and integrity of their journalistic work.

Abdiwali Gooni Director of Communications, Puntland Parliament, Communicates the political nature of the institution and the work carried out by its Members. His core business is to raise awareness of the Puntland Parliament, its powers, its decisions, and activities among media, stakeholders and the general public, bringing the work of the Institution closer to citizens on both centralised and decentralised levels. Before joining the Government of Puntland, Mr. Gooni has been working in media, & non-governmental sectors in Somalia. Over 16 years of work experience with varied local and international organizations in different capacities and having worked in media and Public administration. Previously, Abdiwali Gooni was Former Managing Director of Horseed Media based in Bosaso which advocates for peace and development in Somalia. In 2009 – 2012 – he was Co-founder and Member of Board of Directors Media Association of Puntland (MAP). In 2011-14, he was Coordinator of National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) Mr. Gooni holds Master of Arts in Criminology and Security Studies from Mount Kenya University. BA in International relations and Diplomacy from Cavendish University, Kampala, Uganda as well as countless complementary knowledge.
